Alright, say for instance I'm a developer who has made a revolutionary exploit. Now, say that I'm actually a good person and want to make it free for everyone to use as a way of saying "thanks" to the community and to give people a chance who can't afford anything paid to feel what using a paid exploit is like.
But, oh no! Seems as if my exploit uses a webhost to check for version updates and to automatically download updates and patches. But that's not the only issue! The back-end runs off something that can't just be shoved into php and put on a free website host.
No matter, I'll purchase a VPS from Digital Ocean and host it on there! Oh wait, I only have enough to pay for one month...
Don't worry! I'll fund what I need to buy the VPS by showing users one simple advertisement (no downloads just a 15 wait that shows a couple of ads in a sidebar along the page) to get a single-use "key" to access the exploit!
Wait, even better! If people don't trust the wait, I'll just apply for adsense and make the key site but put ads on the side on that so everyone is happy!
Brilliant! Everything is going to go great.
Now that dev can't do that because everyone is using a way to bypass it that's why developers discontinue or lose motivation.

dude, did you not read it? the key system is the point the dude is hosting his exploit from a web service, he makes a simple key system with a few ads and he cant do that anymore because YOU leaked a skidded key bypasser just go through the ads
