Here are a few things you gotta decide
1. The Desktop environment (kde, gnome, xfce)
2. Do you want it to be stable or do you want it to have the newest software
3. Do you want everything open source or not
1. The desktop environment
look for those i mentionned, and others, and just choose the best one
2. Do you want it to be stable or do you want it to have the newest software
If you want it to be stable, go for debian or red hat
if you want it to have the newest software, go for arch
3. do you want everything open source or not
Most noobies need some kind of propritetary stuff and tbh i love proprietary apps too so idc
now that you know everything, search on google (lol) which ones meets those stuff
the desktop environment is really not important because you can change it when you want, so prioritize the other stuff
the most important thing by far is if you want debian, red hat or arch
here are some choices:
Ubuntu if you like Debian and (multiple DEs available)
Manjaro if you wanna have the latest software without breaking your pc (multiple DEs available)
Fedora if you wanna have red hat and you care a lot about open source (multiple DEs available)
i personally don't understand the purpose of red hat distros, but i know many like fedora because the creator of linux uses it
Also, for Ubuntu, sometimes the DE you are looking for won't be on their website. It's because it's not made by Canonical (the company that made Ubuntu) directly. For example, if you want KDE it's Kubuntu and if you want XFCE it's Xubuntu.
i know this is a bad guide, but i did my best

@Ducxy XFCE looks too old
Also, Arch is super good.
I recommend Manjaro to people who know enough linux to survive a day with it (it means not much).
Obviously, the KDE edition

Don't see much of a 'guide' here, KDE vs GNOME is a personal preference because the two are different in terms of customizability and support for certain things, however, over the years the performance gap between KDE and Xfce has shrunk, this is largely due to the fact that KDE has a much bigger base of developers on it than Xfce, but simplicity is still a factor, not sure why you would call Xfce 'outdated', it's simply not the case, it's a matter of design preference, as Xfce was and still kind of is 'marketed' for performance and simplicity.
On the other hand, the distributions themselves are something to consider, most of them offer unique features, while LTS vs R-R-C is still up for an endless debate, it's up to debate, each has it's pros, cons and uses, as you mostly see LTS support in people who don't develop much, have the distro as just a daily-driver alternative to Windows (or Mac) and server use, while rolling-release-cycle is more popular amongst software developers and other Linux enthusiasts, it sometimes can be the deciding factor whether you go for one distro or another, but, some distributions such as OpenSUSE offer both rolling and LTS versions, so you can pick accordingly. I generally also disagree with the mindset of 'Manjaro if you like RRC but don't want your PC to be bricked', which doesn't really add up, as any rolling-release distro has issues, and Manjaro isn't an exception (Firmware bugs included) and you can screw anything up in Linux.

@Aquatic I just call XFCE outdated because the default design (if you don't customize) really does not look good in my opinion.
It is an opinion though.
Also for Manjaro, when i say "without breaking your pc" it's because people told me Manjaro is more stable than Arch linux because it tests packages a little bit more before releasing or updating them.

Manjaro testing packages more is a myth, as it doesn't make a lot of sense as a whole, a lot of Linux-introduced issues are often system specific, such as conflicts between difference pieces of software (what you'd call incompatibility), as well as generally good old Arch problems (Such as complete incompatibility between free drivers and laptop optimus setups, yet pretty much always attempting to boot with the free drivers, even in the installer), not to mention borked firmware coming from the kernels themselves, while they may adapt and test software before it's released, it doesn't help much as not reading release notes before installing new updates on software and their possible dependencies borks your PC eitherway.
