My overall thoughts on Discord "clients" (official clients & custom clients)

Everything is my opinion

So, first off let me explain what i mean by official and custom;

Official: clients released by discord such as;
        Stable
        Canary
        PTB
            Etc...

Custom: clients released by the community such as;
        Powercord
        BetterDiscord
        Lightcored (I'd stay away from this as it's quite garbage imo)

Thoughts on official:

While the official discord clients are great in all ways, there are a few "downsides" to Discord.
The main downside some people have is the look, people wish to create their own themes & have features like spotify integration (controlling spotify via discord), but none of this is available in the official Discord client, that's why custom clients exist.

Pros: Easy to install, simple to use
Cons: Lack of themes, certain features not existing

Thoughs on custom:

Custom discord clients are honestly, amazing in many ways, though they have their downsides of being against terms of service & seeming to encounter issues across their userbase. They offer things like plugins, custom themes, some inlcuding custom rich presences... which in general may be cool to use but as I said at the beggining, they're against discord's TOS so I advise you to take it at your own risk.

Pros: Custom themes, large variety of plugins
Cons: Somewhat tricky to install to general users, only on PC (from what I know of)

Overall:

If you wish to customize your discord and the way it looks/performs, go for it, use a custom client but always be aware that you can get banned. Discord doesn't necessarily "hunt down" client users though some client features can get you terminated easily.

Custom Clients I recommend:

Powercord (Discord Canary only)  - Great usage (I've used it before & found it quite fun to mess about with plugins)
BetterDiscord (Useable across PTB, Canary and Stable) - Somewhat "great" usage (I encountered many "problems" with BetterDiscord for the ime I used it such as endless update loops, random crashes & more)

Use custom clients at your own risk, I wouldn't recommend using them but if you wish to use them use one of the 2 I mentioned, they're probably the best 2 I know of that plugin developers "support". If you have anything to add just say so yourself.

Discord is not much different from any other garbage proprietary services out there. Discord purposely limits third-party clients or modifications to their own client because it would make their bad privacy practices, lack of features, and non-existent security (something they call "features", with a straight face) obsolete.

It is a mistake to refer to BetterDiscord, Powercord, or Lightcord as clients. They are all patches to the official Discord clients, and all have their own unique features. Discord itself prevents you from using these legally, it's against their terms of service to use any client modifications or any third-party client, this includes using client endpoints outside of the official Discord client.

My choice in this matter is BetterDiscord, I frankly do not give a single smoking turd about what Discord thinks in terms of what I can or can't do with software on my computer. For starters, what I can recommend to individuals interested in security and privacy: DoNotTrack (Disables Discord's telemetry and data collection in the client), DiscordCrypt or EnKrypt's DiscordEncryption in case secure end-to-end encryption is needed to communicate with a group of people or one specific person. And of course, I'd recommend tinkering and disabling the auto-update feature for security reasons.
