So first off, if you have nothing to add to the thread - leave. No one cares about your one-sentence spam replies that contribute absolutely nothing to OP's question and are only there to boost your activity stats.

The issues with private messages on this platform would be entangled with the fact that major reworks would have to be done in order to get it to function (and to function properly, as opposed to a half-baked text-only system). This also signals another obvious flaw in this sort of feature - other services can do it much better.
A chat client here would likely be inferior, due to factors such as the lack of image or file uploading, absent encryption, and other holes in security measures, as well as the fact that not everyone sits here all day, instead of relying on other communications platforms that provide more convenience and security (Such as Keybase, Matrix protocol, Signal protocol, etc.), or only Discord if you're quite stupid.

Major reworks to the website's inner workings to get a semi-ok webchat client working do not outweigh just having contact information such as your email address, Keybase username, Matrix tag, or Discord tag in your signature.
Of course, I wouldn't oppose features such as global chat from coming back - as it is fairly simple to implement, and it doesn't need to be secure to do its job of public message delivery.
