@Explanation You know you don't actually need to pay for copyright... Copyright is a concept that isn't really applied to any specific institution, you don't have to even register it anywhere to enforce it. As soon as you created your work, it's covered under copyright.

It is international. It's a concept called "automatic copyright protection", it was established at the Berne Convention back in the 1800s, and is still used to the modern day as it forms quite the basis for copyright. Signing the berne convention is necessary to join the world trade organization, and so most of the world is a signatory of it, excluding a few countries in the middle east, Africa and southeast asia. Automatic copyright protection grants the right not to have to register one's work for it to be protected under copyright. It applies to anything from movies, songs, paintings all the way to computer software and code.

As you can tell, it has been revised many times. I wouldn't exactly call computer software a thing of the late 1800s.
