Background

I got good grades (in my parents view, considering I have Asian parents since I live in Hong Kong), and they want to get me a new computer. However, this time, they aren't going to spoonfeed me good specifications.

What I need help with

I never explored into what a good spec is, so I'm wondering what is. For anyone wondering, I'm getting a laptop. Windows, of course. My dad asked me to look into what's a good one, but I'm stuck.

I'm not like a hardware guy but do definitely get a good dedicated GPU/graphics card if you want to play graphics intensive games smoothly, are working with graphics-related things (3d rendering, animation, etc), or just training deep learning models (from experience).

@61084again depends on what you're going to use it for
some bare minimum for a half-decent laptop
make sure its a ryzen 5/i5 or better
it must at least have a SSD
try to get more than 8 gb of ram
(considering a lot of laptops still come with 8 gb only, u prob have to upgrade it yourself)

if your budget is under 800 usds, you will probably get a very mediocre pc for use at home. (probably intel Xe graphics, 8 gigs of ram, 500 gb ssd, intel i5 7-10th gen?)

I have no idea what your budget is, so ill just list laptops with good specs ranging in price.

On Newegg:

Acer Nitro 5 - AN515-45-R0FN
https://www.newegg.com/shale-black-acer-nitro-5-an515-45-r0fn-gaming-entertainment/p/N82E16834360083?Item=N82E16834360083

This laptop has a 144hz 1080p display paired with an RTX 3050Ti. It's not the best card you can buy in a laptop, but it is the most affordable in the GPU shortage. The CPU is a 6 core Ryzen 5 5600h running at 3.30 GHz(4.20 GHz boost) 8Gb of DDR4 3200mhz ram and a 512GB SSD to top it off.

The ram and the SSD are lacking IMO, but for 900$, it's a good bundle for the price as long as you aren't playing games at max 100% of the time.

I might add more laptops in here later, but id rather not dig around specs and comparisons for another hour rn.

@63568 Keep in mind you still need a good cpu for gaming, having a 3090 and a Pentium is practically useless and you are losing so much potential.

I would personally recommend something you can use for years to come, no point upgrading to something you won't use for long, might as well go big and save more money in future.

These are some of the laptops I'm looking at buying, good prices for what you get btw.

Option 1 (Best, and great value)

Option 1

Pros: Powerful CPU & GPU (11th Gen i7 & 3070), 165hz integrated monitor, 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD.

Cons: Is known to have some thermal issues after long use. And sometimes power, meaning the CPU and GPU can't get enough power to run at full potential.

Option 2 (Great laptop, not quite as good)

Option 2

Pros: One of the best cooling laptops on the market, powerful CPU & GPU (Intel core i7 10th Gen, RTX 3070) 144hz integrated display, 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD (Has second slot for another SSD), 16GB of RAM.

Cons: No webcam or integrated mic (Both of these would be trash anyway, you can use your phone for a webcam)

Make sure you research before you choose. Don't want to end up buying a piece of sh*t when you could have gotten something good.

I am not an Intel femboy btw, Ryzen all the way, but the better laptops have Intel rn sadly.

@KLUTZYY

Your recommendations are 1.5x-2x the price point I proposed. I'm looking for laptops around the 1k price point, as spending 2k-3k on a laptop is not the best choice. If op could wait a few months, he could probably build a desktop that outperforms any laptop on the market for less than 2k.
